About me
I love creating with my hands. When I work with textiles, I often have the feeling that my hands take on a life of their own. That they, in collaboration with the textiles, know what needs to be done, if I just let it happen.
For many years I was completely disconnected from that feeling. I worked exclusively from my head, but I would occasionally recall it when I thought about my education at the Design School Kolding. The feeling of my hands working by themselves when I stood at a mannequin draping a shape, or sat at the loom letting the yarns speak. I'm trained in both fashion and textiles, and so I'm engaged with both form and texture.
Some of the best moments at the design school were during the final years, sitting and working at the loom, creating textiles and expressions from different materials. That's why I recognized the feeling of textiles in my hands when my daughter lured me into the knitting wave during the pandemic in 2020. When I started creating with my hands again, I knew that this was what I was meant to do.
I can't help but experiment…
I don't get on well with patterns/recipes, and I quickly moved on to experimenting with 3-D forms for the wall. The moment I did that, I unconsciously began creating vulva-like shapes. My daughters and my mother pointed it out to me, and I thought, "let it come!" And I opened up to the feminine and the power of women, letting that become my overarching inspiration.
The recycled textiles are part of both the idea and the expression. They represent the textiles that women have, since time immemorial, created, washed, repaired, and cared for on behalf of the family. They also give a more rustic expression to the works, which yarn alone cannot create.
Before I saw the light…
As mentioned, I was disconnected from the intuitive, bodily way of working for many years. After my design education, I worked with decorating spaces through edited digital photographs. I wrote a PhD on aesthetics in space and user involvement, and worked with interior design. None of it, however interesting it may have been, gave me the joy that I feel when expressing myself artistically through knitting and textiles.
